Super Youth House Cup May 2026

Last Thursday was our Super Youth House Cup for newer fencers!!  It was Exciting!!  Thank you to Jeff and Ashley for organizing/ running the show!!  Charlie and Nillo our Refs!  Devan on demand Armor! All the parents/ grandparents/ friends who came to support all the fencers!! Thank You!!

Let’s start with the older fencers (13-15yr s old ) Patton, Anika, Hunter, Aila, and Foster. In pools Hunter just took the cake and ran with it!! Nobody scored more than one touch on him!!! He was smiling!!  Patton was strong with one loss to Hunter.  Anika earned two victories with some aggressive fencing!!  Foster one victory but gave Patton a run losing 4-5.  Aila after over a month away from fencing was feeling out her timing/ distance in a comp situation.  In the DE s first up Hunter and Anika… Hunter kept his streak going advancing to the final.  Then Foster and Aila - now this was a fight for every touch and Foster had weapon/cord issues which adds to the stress of both fencers but Aila kept cool and simple in her actions because Fosters game is very fast multiple blade actions combined with his determination to hit you!!  Aila played his game in pools and lost but in the DE Aila played her game of active footwork pushing/ pulling and making simple Convictive actions to win 15-12 but Foster never gave up!! Next Aila had Patton to see who fences Hunter in the final.  Back and forth bout with excellent touches by both fencers till Patton's simple feint attacks started to connect to win 15-12!

In the final Hunter would take control of the bout but Patton would fight back never giving up!!  Pushing Hunter into possible defeat but in the last few touches Hunter got really focused to finish the bout 15-13 to Earn the Gold!!  Fantastic work everyone!!

Now the 12yr and under was just as fierce!!  Spark (8yr) and Maddy (9yr) were really fencing up because Molly-Rowan are 12 and Milo 11! Milo in pools was on fire- flèching- making parry ripostes left and right. Then he ran into Rowan but he pulled it out with a nice simple attack to go 4-0.  Rowan was disappointed but ready for DEs.  Molly felt pools were so-so, she didn’t feel engaged and her tactics were off.  Spark (the newest fencer, only 6 times fencing) was moving- pushing pulling in bouts and had a victory against Maddy.  Maddy also super new was very nervous so not fencing the way she does in practice which is taking risks but she scored touches on everyone!! Rowan did his job in every bout calm- moving creating opportunities for touches.

DEs brought Molly vs Milo but Molly had a Emotional/ Mental shift in her game that changed the dynamics of the bout giving her the opportunities to attack into Milo's preparation giving her a 4 touch lead in the beginning that she didn’t relinquish!! Sending her into the final!  Quite the upset!!

Maddy vs Spark now this was another Fierce Battle!!  Maddy was determined to win!!  She held a strong lead at the break by 7-4 ( going to 10)!!  However, the Spark wasn’t going to roll over and die!!  So Spark pushed and pulled with patience (a Miracle!! probably really surprised Maddy because I was stunned!) settling up a leg touch and from there Spark tied the bout up 9-9!!  Really this is the final for these Grrrls!!  Spark pushed Maddy but didn’t attack (unusual!). Maddy saw Spark hesitate (or did she?), took the opportunity to lunge just  fell short Spark parried and riposted to win!!

Spark had to fence Rowan next but he was determined to get to the final!! Spark fought for touches never making it easy for Rowan but lost!!

The final was Molly vs Rowan!! Rowan was in control of the bout in the beginning but Molly bounced back to make it 8-9!! Molly went for a flèche off the line (great tactical decision!) missed, continued, missed again because Rowan’s fleet feet retreats kept him just out of her distance and he hit with a Counterattack to take Gold!!

Everyone wins in a Comp like this where learning the process, the rules, supporting teammates, experiencing the stresses of comp fencing and how they respond….

Take Care!! Thank You!!
